Looking exclusively for scholarly articles? 

Look to see if you can limit your search to Scholarly Articles before you search.  In most databases, you can do so. Jstor and MLA International Bibliography only contains scholarly material.

The Oxford English Dictionary, now searchable online, offers the most extensive collection of word histories for the English language.  Search for a word to get a list of dates and quotes of the first usages of a particular word, up to modern day usage.

Literature Resource Center
This database provides criticism of writers and works, as well as extensive biographical materials on many important writers.

Cambridge Collections Online: Literature and Classics Collection
A collection of the digital versions of the print Cambridge Companion volumes in Literature, Classics, Philosophy, Religion and Culture. Over 2,800 scholarly essays are included, freely searchable, and available full-text in PDF format within the database.

JSTOR: The Scholarly Journal Archive
An extensive, full-text database of academic journal articles, covering most academic disciplines with a particularly strong collection in th e humanities.  The results will be listed in order of relevance.

Academic Search Premier
A general database that indexes articles in academic journals, newspapers and magazines covering nearly all academic disciplines.

Proquest Research Library
A database with both popular and scholarly materials that span the academic disciplines.  Some materials are full-text within this database, and some are not.

MLA  - info
The most important database for literary research, Modern Language Association International Biography is an enormous database indexing scholarly resources on all subjects related to linguistics and literature of any genre from any period. Please note that the database indexes not only journal articles, but also books, book chapters and dissertations. Please note that this is not a full-text database.
