Searchable Databases

Use the following databases to search for research papers in many forms: journal articles, book chapters, government reports, conference proceedings, etc.

International Security & Counter Terrorism Reference Center
This database is designed to inform the analysis process, as well as enhance the general understanding of security and terrorism-related issues. The database also contains some information on general crime analysis and criminal justice from an international perspective.  Content includes articles, news feeds, reports, summaries, books, blogs, FAQs, and proprietary Background Information Summaries.

SocINDEX with Fulltext - info
A subject-specific sociology database with extensive coverage of many important journals published in the field.  Notice that you can limit to Scholarly journals, including peer-reviewed, before you search.

National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS) * - info

This database is produced and maintained by the U.S. government offering information on most aspects of criminal justice. The database contains abstracts describing over 200,000 resources, including “statistics, research findings, program descriptions, congressional hearing transcripts, and training materials.”

Digital National Security Archive
This collection of historical documents makes up the biggest single collection of declassified government documents on national security available.  Browse through the collections if you're looking for ideas on what to research, or search for a particular topic.

Annual Reviews - info
This database offers fully searchable and browsable titles published under the Annual Reviews.  The chapters within these volumes offer overviews of academic research within a given field, and so are appropriate and often ideal for background reading.  They don't publish a specific Criminal Justice volume, but volumes in Sociology, Psychology, and Law and Social Science may prove to be useful.

Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence (CSPV)*
Produced by Colorado State University, this site hosts several searchable databases that include scholarly, practical, and organizational material for those researching any aspect of violence and society.  This literature includes journal articles, books, book chapters, reports, literature reviews, and even dissertation abstracts.

Political Risk Yearbook
This collection of detailed country profiles offers information on both the current economic and political atmosphere of a country, as well as forecasting for where the country is headed in the future.

Multidisciplinary Databases

Find newspaper, magazine, trade, and academic journal articles from across disciplines in these databases.

Academic Search Premier - info
A general database that indexes articles in academic journals, newspapers and magazines covering nearly all academic disciplines.

ProQuest Research Library - info
A database with both popular and scholarly materials that span the academic disciplines.  Some materials are full-text within this database, and some are not.

JSTOR - info
This database offers full-text journal articles in just about any discipline, although no current issues are available in Jstor (most journals’ most recent issue is from 3-4 years ago).  Over 30 journals from the discipline of Sociology are included, many of which will be relevant to the field of Criminal Justice, and all journals within Jstor are scholarly.

LexisNexis® Academic - info
A database that contains current, up-to-date newspapers, both regional and international.  It also contains magazines, law reviews, medical journals, state and federal codes and case law.
