Tips for Searching Statistics on the Web

Most quality statistics will be from government websites.  If you're searching for statistics on the open web, make sure that you don't take statistics from .com, .org, or .net sites.  If you find statistics you'd like to use on sites with these domains, see if the sources for these statistics are cited, and go to the orginal source to track down the statistical information there.

And remember, if there are .gov sources in your results list, those are the most trustworthy to begin with!

Finding Statistics

  • National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)
Comprehensive statistical website from the U.S Department of Education. Some specific publications are listed below.
  • The Condition of Education
Provides an overview of conditions in society that affect education. Includes indicators of enrollment, achievement, diversity, and resources of educational institutions.
    Available online from the NCES.
  • Digest of Education Statistics
A compendium of statistical information issued every year since 1962. Covers all levels of education, with an index and source notes that lead to additional statistics
    Available online from the NCES.
  • Projections of Education Statistics
Projections for enrollments, graduates, staff and expenditures, from the NCES.
  • Pennsylvania Department of Education - PreK-12 Schools Statistics
Statistics on students, staff, finances, schools and libraries.
  • U.S. Census Bureau
This site offers searchable and browsable results of past U.S. censuses. Browsing through the Subjects A-Z page (linked at the top right-hand side of the homepage) will allow you to browse through the educational data they offer.
  • U.S. Census Bureau - American FactFinder
Search for information within a given U.S. area, or go to the Search tab at the top and search by keyword for what you're looking for.
